Do I need a CDL to operate farm machinery?
No. You are not required to have a commercial driver’s license to operate farm machinery.

When am I required to have a CDL?
If you are carrying hazardous materials or if you are operating a vehicle that weighs more than 26,000 pounds.

How old do you have to be before you can obtain a South Dakota commercial driver’s license?
You must be at least 16 years old.

Do I have to be a resident of South Dakota to obtain a commercial driver’s license?
Yes, you must reside in the state of South Dakota to obtain a South Dakota commercial driver’s license. You may have a CDL that is issued by another state, but if you are working out of South Dakota, you must have a South Dakota CDL. Individuals moving to South Dakota from out of state much transfer their CDL to a valid South Dakota one.

How long is the written exam?
The written exam is 50 questions.

How long is the hazardous materials written exam?
The hazardous materials exam is 30 questions.

How long are the written exams for all other endorsements?
The combination vehicles, tanker, and double/triple trailers endorsement tests are 20 questions each.

What score must I obtain to pass each of the written exams?
To pass an exam, you must score 80% or better.

Can I take the written exam and road test anywhere?
No. you must take the test at a South Dakota DMV or a certified third-party testing center.

What tests, besides the written exam, must I complete to obtain my CDL?
You must pass a pre-trip inspection, a basic vehicle control test, and a road test, as well as the written exam, before you can obtain your commercial driver’s license.

What should I bring with me when applying for a CDL?
You should bring all completed required forms, a social security card, and your current regular South Dakota driver’s license.

I already have a CDL, but it isn’t issued in the state of South Dakota. How long do I have to transfer my license?
You have 30 days after you move to the state of South Dakota to transfer your CDL.

When can I apply for endorsements?
You can apply for an endorsement as you are applying for your CDL, or at any time thereafter. When you apply, you must show proof of certification for each endorsement.
